What is phototoxicity?
Phototoxicity occurs when certain chemicals, like those in citrus oils (e.g., lime and bergamot), absorb UV light, causing skin reactions such as redness and inflammation. This reaction mainly happens when these oils are applied to the skin and exposed to sunlight. To reduce risk, avoid applying phototoxic oils directly on the skin before sun exposure. Using these fragrances in a well-ventilated space minimizes airborne irritants, but it does not prevent phototoxicity on the skin.
