Do candles hurt houseplants?
Candles can harm houseplants in several ways, including via soot damage, heat issues, and air quality. The soot from burning candles can coat plant leaves, blocking sunlight and clogging the pores (stomata) that plants use for gas exchange. This interferes with photosynthesis and the plant's ability to breathe. Similarly, placing candles too close to plants can damage leaves from direct heat. The general warming of small spaces from multiple candles can stress temperature-sensitive plants.
